Depression

What is depression?

Depression is a mood disorder that can create various symptoms: sadness, low energy, lack of motivation; even irritability and anger. Depression affects not only how you feel, think and act, but it can also lead to a variety of emotional and physical problems. If you’re suffering from depression, you may have trouble getting through the day, and sometimes, you may feel as if your life isn’t worth living. Depression robs the spirit of joy.

Are you struggling with depression?

Everyone experiences sadness during seasons in their lifetime. Most people would admit they have felt depressed. However, when you experience a depressed mood that lasts for several days, weeks, or months, your emotion seems disproportionate compared with the situation, normal everyday functions are difficult, seeing a professional counselor is indicated.

How does therapy address and treat depression?

Depression is an internal struggle, and has been said to be “anger towards within”. Suppressing feelings can ignite depression. Talking with a counselor is effective as it helps to process the depression and create a plan to treat it. Some people struggling with depression tend to isolate; this is not healthy as while it may feel good to disconnect, it keeps the depression active. Therapy offers you a safe space to explore your experience of depression without worrying about being judged or not having your emotions validated. Sometimes depression accompanies anxiety and your counselor will assess this and collaboratively create a treatment plan to return to normal and healthy functioning again.

Depression is highly treatable through psychotherapy (counseling). It is important to take the first step and make an appointment. It has been said that even mustering up the courage to make the appointment felt liberating. So don’t let depression rob your joy – make an appointment .
